Green Eggs and Jams: Lyrical Phrases to Turn Pages was a HUGE success! It was a wonderful turn-out; thank you to all that supported us (AAC, MEISA and of course, YOU!), for spreading the word and for dropping by! afterHOURS clicked in over 150+ people AND all the contributions totaled to over $300 and two boxes full of books! Bravo!

Ready for the next big BKD event? Instead of LISTENING to jams, I hope YOU are ready to JAM out at GK Dance-A-Thon 2011!... For 6 hours. Last dancer dancing takes home the grand prize! And the prize WILL be grand. :)

This charity dance marathon is for Gawad Kalinga. Gawad Kalinga (GK), a not-for-profit foundation that strives to eradicate poverty in the Philippines and other countries. Their vision for a slum and squatter-free Philippines is taken to action through the strategy of "providing land for the landless, homes for the homeless, and food for the hungry."

We've got big things for you this month so come out to our FIRST general meeting on Thursday January 20, 2011! We will be discussing our very first main event, a benefit we have been planning since last semester: GREEN EGGS AND JAMS!

Oh yes, Barkada was MORE than ready and absolutely killed both dance performances at Kamayan and Dance for Me. And I quote the Performance Coordinators, Justin Bioc and Tim DeJesus, "You all were just incredible and marvelous and fantastic and stunning andwonderful. Just unbelievable." Congratulations on winning Crowd Favorite Barkada! We did it!

This semester is coming to an end... but please join us for one final hoorah at Annual Christmas Potluck on Thursday, December 9 from 6:00-9:00pm at the ISSI. It is time for us to celebrate the holiday season and the success of the semester with plenty of food, friends, family and FUN!

HELLO ALL!

Sincere apologies for the lack of updates halfway through the semester. But have no fear, NU Barkada is ALIVE and LIVIN’ IT UP!

So what has NU Barkada been up to?

The First GM was held on Friday September 17, 2010 in the ISSI Lounge from 6-8 pm. So many enthusiastic new people shared their love for Halo-halo while mingling and feasting. Even e-board had a grand time after recovering from their previous night adventures as presented in the Fall Semester introduction video.

Our Second GM was bursting of outdoor FUN in the fens where Barkada huffed and puffed through games of kickball.

From the ocho ocho to the chilly chilly cha cha, Barkada got everyone to “move it move it” at the third GM, where several line dances were taught. Be sure to share our dances with your families even though your 78-year old lola already knows how to boogie.

At the fourth GM, Barkada held their annual Beatnik Bungalow benefit, a cozy open-mic event where we play music, recite poetry, and perform our lovely talents. If you missed out, check out our YouTube for some videos!

At our most recent GM, Barkada learned about Filipino superstitions in celebration of Halloween by playing a competitive game that involved lots and lots of toilet paper and lots and lots of mummies.

Don’t miss out on our Barkada adventures! We have already danced the night away at the MFA, eaten over 20 pounds of burgers and fries at Eagle’s Deli, petted starfishes at the New England Aquarium and journeyed all around Northeastern campus and Boston in our undergarments. Keep an eye out for more adventures and please feel free to join!

Our biggest event is creeping up.... *drumroll*

Show Stoppers

With our last performance of the 2009-2010 Academic Year, your PC's feel a certain sadness and happiness that can only come from the most fantastic experience. Yes, it's a bittersweet feeling because 1) we can look back at all our accomplishments that range from Kamayan, D4M, Bahay Kubo, Celebr(asian), ISSI Gala, to Relay for Life and 2) we can look forward, to the upcoming elections, and know that our run has almost come to an end.

But for all the memories we made these past two semesters, whether they be at dance practices, the actual performances, or bonding sessions at the dining hall or office, we thank you for your dedication, enthusiasm, and love you have shown Barkada. You guys have truly made Barkada feel like a family (and to others, an actual dance team-- which has it's good and bad sides :P).

Watch out for our End of Year Potluck. We'll have something special for you ;D

The way we live tells us who we are.

The nipa hut is considered the national house of the Philippines. Translated in Tagalog, it is called a "bahay kubo." The traditional bahay kubo follows the old Southeast Asian rural archetype of the single-room dwelling where all family activities happen in one area. To many, this house summarizes the Filipino concept of space- demonstrating the lifestyle and culture of the people: togetherness, closeness, and unity.

A wealth of folk knowledge surround the bahay kubo. Communal ties bring neighbors together to construct the house; familial bonds shape the relationships and recognize the spirit of community.

As a family, we come together and build a home. Welcome to our bahay kubo, our Barkada.

This year, you will discover one couple's story about leaving home and raising a family in America. As they struggle to instill Filipino values to their children, they are all challenged to return to their roots and hold on to those traditions. Through drama, dance, and diversity… enjoy this celebration with us, this festival of culture.

1st GM of 08/09!

Hi all,

So this past Friday, September 26, Barkada finally had our first general meeting of the 08/09 school year. After weeks of planning, filming for the video and countless hours editing it, everything culminated to the two hours that made up one of the best first general meetings Barkada has ever hosted.

At 6:30pm, people had already begun to fill the seats. By 6:50, the room was packed with excited members, both old and new, and they were all busy mingling and checking out the dance practice/biggie smalls mentoring program/volunteering sign up booth. This fall’s Sari-Sari, put together by the awesome PR’s, were all over the room being read and enjoyed. By 6:55, the meeting commenced.

It started off with an introduction of the e-board. Then the promotional video was shown. It video features short interviews of prominent figures around NU community that work or have worked with Barkada, as well as some of the founding members of the group. The PAAC co-chairs also made an appearance. After the promo video, the Barkada Superheroes video was shown. IT WAS AWESOME! The entire e-board played different superheroes (or faux superheroes) and went on a journey around campus learning about the different things the “academy” (aka Barkada) does. They also had a tough time trying to save Mr. Garsha and fending off the Jabbawockeez. The video touched on events such as the ISSI Cruise, Kamayan, Ski Trip, Political Info Session, Dance-a-thon, and more! Check out the video’s on youtube, they should be up fairly soon.

After the videos, we played an ice breaker. The point of the game was to get everyone linked to each other by commonalities. It proved that everyone is connected in some way, shape, or form. So deep.

After the ice breaker, Gawad Kalinga, a not-for-profit organization that gives back to the Philippines- made a short presentation on GKU- Gawad Kalinga Universities. GKU’s mission is to get colleges involved with the movement, and so the GK reps were there to try and spark interest in Barkada members. To support GK, Barkada will be hosting a dance marathon in January. More details as the semester progresses

After a quick power point presentation of upcoming events and some announcements, we were finally able to eat. There was an assortment of Filipino/Asian foods available, and everything was suuuper delicious! It was a good way to conclude the meeting. Two Barkada t-shirts were raffled off at the end as well!

People stuck around until about 9:15pm, when the room finally cleared out. All in all, the general meeting was a success. Barkada definitely has a strong presence in the NU community this year, and with all the events lined up, this year will prove to be exciting and crazy busy. It’s all worth it in the end with Barkada though. Trust me.

Can’t wait for the 2nd GM this Thursday! Barkada does: KICKBALL!

The Amazing Adventures of Barkada E-Board: The Craziest Morning Ever

So, as you may or may not know, your lovely e-board gave back to our wondrous community this past weekend. We volunteered at the Greater Boston Food Bank. There, we packaged and sorted food. Let's just say it was very interesting but so much fun. Pretend you were there with us by reading this lovely entry:

We're like the US Postal Service! We travel through rain, snow, and wind! The weather was not in our favor. Pretty sure I need a new umbrella.

For once, we were on time…in fact some of us were early! And well the bus decided not to come on time but instead be 10 minutes late.

McDonalds! Hash browns for everyone J They were so slow there, like snails in molasses. Mia says she can do so much better. Jaime got an ice coffee…let me remind you that it was snowing out.

Finding the food bank…like Finding Nemo but so much worse and yet so much more entertaining. The directions say to go to the sidedoor, ring the bell and somebody will come help you. Sounds SO simple…not so much though.

Tiff has done this before, she's the kind hearted one of the group…not so good with directions and her memory has seemed to slip a little though. She goes, “Oh! This is the building.” So we all walk up the stairs but there is no bell. So we knock and after a while Nikki says, “Guys, the doors padded. No wonder nobody's heard us.” Wonderful!

We realize there's another door a little farther down but you have to walk this ledge to get there. So Martin, Mia, Nikki, Kristin, and I go across. There's a bell! WOOOOOO J We ring the bell and there's no answer for a bit. So we ring it again. This little Asian man opens the door and we say, “We're here to volunteer at the food bank.” He stares at us for a little while and then shuts the door. Kay, thanks man. You're a big help.

We ring it again and he does it again. But this time the staring is a bit longer. More creepy in my opinion. So we decide to go back across the ledge to where everyone else is.

When the ledge widens, there are these pieces of wood stacked up. But they aren't steady, they're kind of like a seesaw but thicker. We decide to make it more difficult than it actually has to be and we evened out our weight and made sure that there was a person on each side of it so we didn't fall. It was like The Gauntlet…so intense. After we all crossed, we realized that we each went across it alone the first time. Yeah, your e-board is super special...super special.

While crossing the ledge, I decided okay, we're not that high, I can jump off. So I jumped, it was very graceful. After I jump, Kristin goes oh, that's smart. She jumps too. (Or as Jaime put it. Kristin saw me jump and said OH! I have to jump now too!) She lands nicely, both feet on the ground. And then 5 seconds later she topples over very slowly. She slipped, don't make fun of her- that's mean. (Ask Nikki to reenact it though, she does a fabulous job.)

We decide that this entrance isn't the right entrance and walk around another side of the building and find people and an actual entrance to the building. (PLEASE KEEP IN MIND THAT THIS IS LIKE TWENTY MINUTES AFTER WE GOT THERE.) We walk in and everyone's staring at us like we have 3 heads each, it's unpleasant and we realize that the place we are in is called Food Pack- aka THE WRONG PLACE. This guy finally says, “You're here to volunteer at Food Bank? Okay, Food Bank and Food Pack are the same. Come!” And Jaime says, “Okay! Let's help!” And we laugh at him cause the guy was joking.

We leave and walk down the block some more when we see a HUGE sign that says, “GREATER BOSTON FOOD BANK”

Seriously.

We go around the corner of the building and there's a bell! We ring the bell and somebody comes and lets us in J WON-DER-FUL.

Once we get settled with the rest of the volunteers we're explained all the different jobs that we can have and what we will be doing.

Most of us decide to be “2 nd Sorters” because we are told that they need to be “sociable.” Except for Franco & Ryan; they were pallatizers aka the macho men that lifted heavy boxes.

Your lovely e-board sorted out boxes and boxes of food for 2 hours and it was so intense but so much fun. It was a wonderful high energy bonding experience. We each sorted and made 103 meals possible J

People like to throw things at you and then smile when you try and give them dirty looks. Honestly, not cool.

Sips is a beverage! Stuffing is a condiment! Too many olives! Chocolate chips are baking needs not snacks! Beans and tuna are protein!

Follow the white line, it'll take you everywhere you need to go!

After a long couple of hours, that flew by so quickly. We left our meals behind.

Needless to say, volunteering made us feel great. Giving back to the community is never a bad thing and it made us feel wonderful knowing that we were helping other people out. J So next time you see somebody that needs help, lend them a hand and you'll make somebody's day a little easier.

The Scoop on Mahalo-Halo

So for those of you who weren't too busy with their significant others between the hours of 6 to 8pm last Thursday, you were able to experience the joy that was Mahalo-Halo! Looking past the terrible ice shaving job done by one of your PR's and DC's… we hope that that your halo=halo's were fabulous. The chunks of ice added texture anyways… something to chew on =].

But of course, the highlight of the meeting was not just the sweet treats… it was being able to hear some crazy and/or embarrassing dating/relationship stories. The following would have to be the winners."

“This one time I went out to dinner and everything went fine. We get back to his place and I had to pee. As soon as I flushed the water started rising and overflowing. His whole apartment and kitchen was drenched and smelly and his sneakers got ruined. I was so horrified but surprisingly he wasn't mad. He just laughed. At least it wasn't poo =)”

“This is more awkward than embarrassing… we were at the mall and I went to the food court. Date went to the bathroom came out and told me he sharted himself. EW.”

“In 11 th grade my best friend Jon confessed that he really liked me so I dated his cousin because I didn't want to ruin our friendship…"

“I had this MAJOR crush on this girl, and I finally had a chance to drive her home from school. She told me she was hungry so I took her to the most exclusive and prestigious PIZZA PLACE in town. I asked her what she wanted and she wanted something hot so I thought “jalapeno's…duh.” She never had them before…instead of driving her home I drove her to the hospital for her bad allergic reaction.”

The Crotched Highlight Reel

• Louis go “crotched” by a “bear” and has proof of it…check out his face- it's beautiful!
• Almost everyone went on the big slopes.
• Claire & LT went snowboarding!
• We slept on a cafeteria floor…let's not talk about this.
• Our little bedroom, fenced in by tables and chairs.
• Sleeping for about 4 hours…amazing.
• The “buffet” that you can only go to once
• The weird “tostitos” that were actually really interesting tasting taquitos.
• Jaime almost getting to eat Lily Ko eggs.
• Jaime going into the non-coed girls bathroom
• A mole moment with Nikki and KToy
• Not showering after 5 ½ hours of snowboarding/skiing
• Getting many many bruises
• Singing Gloria Estefan, Celine Dion, & Britney Spears in Jason's car…from his ipod.
• At the top of the mountain, at the beginning of the green trail. Jaime realizes that Nikki and Vanessa are up there and says, “Vanessa? Nikki? Are you really up here?”
• Sledding down the bunny hill on snowboards
• Trying to get off the chairlift…oh, what a problem for some people.
• Invading Quizno's and getting yelled at because we were too loud.
• Hat hair.

Needless to say, I hope you had a wonderful time if you went. And if you didn't go, you missed out and you should definitely go if we have another trip cause let me tell you it was quite memorable J

1st GM of Spring 08!

The first general meeting of Barkada went awesome (as usual). There were so many people! They were all packed in this tiny room with two windows which actually was good cause people actually spoke to each other because they were so close to each other. Well it started off with an introduction of the e-board members. That was boring right? And then some announcements. The ski trip sounded rather awesome, and so did the dance sets that Barkada was planning. I think I should check those out in the calendar. They had so many events it was so hard to keep track of all of them! They all sounded fun though!!

They showed this little video the eboard put together. That was very funny because the video was an adaptation of the sitcom "The Office." They called it "The Barkada Office." I couldn't believe that the eboard could actually pull off a video that good! It told me alot about Barkada and what they did. Everyone was cracking up! I hope these videos come out more frequently. "The Barkada Office episode 2?" Anyways, that was actually most of the formal part of the meeting.

After the meeting we had really good food! Tiff Yung, the Secretary of Barkada cooked some really good pasta! The wings were gone too by the time I got to it. Oh well... They said that we have dinners every other week so that won't be a problem. I heard that this week, we are having a dinner at the dining hall. Some people are going to need to get signed in I suppose. That doesn't matter cause at least I get to spend time with my new found family here at Northeastern.

We hung out for a bit more and met new people. In the span of about 2 hours, I had met so many new people, it was unbelievable!! I was sad when I realized the meeting was about to end.I felt really welcome and had so much fun! I'm definitely looking forward to more of Barkada's events in the future.
